SHOP LOCAL. After Black Friday comes Small Business Saturday on November 24. Our local businesses depend on YOU all year round. And by helping them, you help us. If you stop by one of our advertiser businesses, let them know you saw their ad in The Rockaway Times!

Raise a glass to Vino by the Sea, the new wine and liquor store that has finally opened at Arverne By The Sea. Running a small business is a monumental challenge and sometimes the hardest part is getting open. Waiting on contractors and permits (i.e. government bureaucracy) and other things can break any sane person. Congratulations to Adam Linet as Vino opens just in time for the holidays. He had hoped to be open in early summer! Buy a bottle, or a case, and help him get a good start.

The 2019 Broad Channel Historical Calendar provides tide charts for the Rockaway/Broad Channel area. You don’t have to wait to see streets flooded before deciding it must be high tide! The calendars are on sale at Bagel & Barista II and Channel Market, both on Cross Bay Boulevard in the Channel.

A Veterans Job and Resource Fair will be held Friday, December 7 from 12-4 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street. State Senator James Sanders is sponsoring the event. To RSVP or register as a vendor, call 718-523-3069. The event is for veterans and current service members only, and for companies or organizations seeking to hire those who’ve served.

It might feel like the North Pole on Thanksgiving with temps in the 20s, but that reminds us that Joe Mure’s spectacular Little North Pole, an event that draws huge crowds and raises big money for juvenile diabetes, is set for Saturday, December 8. We’ll have more details in upcoming issues.

Who knew? There is something that is basically the Oscars of bread-making.  Tiptree, a UK outfit, decided to expand their bread-baking competition to the U.S. and Rockaway’s Sarah Owens was declared the overall winner. That’s right.  The best bread-baker (and the best bread) in the country can be found in Rockaway. Sarah can often be found cooking up dinners at The Castle on Beach 117th. Congrats, Sarah.

There was a groundbreaking for the new Far Rockaway library on Monday. Politicians and various officials posed for the usual photo with shovels and hardhats. Truthfully, we’d rather cover the ribbon-cutting and save the congratulations for when a job is done. Too often we celebrate a groundbreaking and then learn about projects running out of money or being delayed. The library is supposed to be completed in 2021. We’ll see.

So...we have to acknowledge real progress as a ribbon-cutting occurred at Beach 34th Street on Tuesday. The Beach Channel Senior Apartments, a senior community with 100 percent affordable new apartments for low-income seniors, opened in time for 154 seniors to have new homes for the holidays. A number of city agencies and Councilman Donovan Richards were instrumental in getting this project done.
