Sorry we're late! The mid-week holiday pushed us back a day. As a heads up, next week will be the same! Look out for the RT on Friday.

Happy New Year! Good riddance to 2018. Best of luck to all who pledge to do better in 2019.

We’re not in the TV morning show or Hallmark movie business, but how about that story of Dr. Galvin and his newfound family in last week’s Rockaway Times?  You’re raised as an only child and decades later you find out you’ve got seven siblings who’ve been looking for you? Unbelievable! And a great holiday story at that!

Look at the slightly brighter side: The shortest day, the day with less sunlight than any other, is behind us. Days are getting longer!

Get the hot toddies and hot showers ready. The New Year’s Day Polar Plunges that occur traditionally every year will be a chilly challenge as usual, but not as bad as last year when the morning temps were in the teens. This time around, forecasters say they’ll be some rain and maybe snow showers with temperatures in the mid-30s. Popular plunges take place around Beach 119th, Beach 127th and Beach 146th.

This week in history: Pat McVeigh was born!

Although we noted the anniversary of when the Golden Venture ran aground at Fort Tilden in June 1993, we were recently sent a link to a video by Bruno Giuliani, a producer at CUNY-TV, to a video about that extraordinary event. You can catch the video  here: facebook.com/DiverseCityshow/videos/304616926844035/

Due to the government shutdown, there are no visitor services at Gateway National Recreation Area, including public information, restrooms, trash collection, and maintenance, including plowing. NPS social media and websites are not being updated. All park programs have been cancelled, including the surf-lifeguard pre-employment tests.

Our thoughts go out to the friends and family of Tim Hill. The husband, father, and founder of the Beach 91st St Community Garden died on December 25. In lieu of a funeral, please join Kiva, family, and friends in the Beach 91st St. Community Garden (136 Beach 91st St) at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 28 to celebrate and remember Tim.

The next Bugalou concert is Saturday January 5, 7 p.m. at St. Camillus Academy Auditorium with Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers and guests, 3 Sheets to the Wind. There’s also a good tie-in to the event as Bugalou is helping the Rockaway Artists Alliance raise funds to rebuild the roof of their gallery and performance space at Fort Tilden Building T-7. Bugalou is donating $5 for each ticket sold to this show and there will also be a 50/50 raffle to raise additional funds. Good on you, Bugalou!
