Hi my name is Barbara Buffolino and the Surfside Tenant Association (SHAFT) is preparing to fight a proposal to stop Alma Realty in getting a rezoning for development on the Surfside property. They are looking to build additional residential buildings and retail stores in the backyard of the current 2000+ residents that call Surfside their home.

Over the past 10 years, SHAFT has been relentless in advocating for the residents by keeping Alma accountable for the safety, health and the quality of life for our home.

Surfside is the property that is located on Shore Front Parkway and Rockaway Beach Blvd. between Beach 105th St. and Beach 108th St. Currently there are three 12-story high rise buildings with over 2000+ residents. The property supports parking, playground areas, a pool, walkways and green space. We have seen a rendering of the proposed development that shows the addition of three more high rise buildings that would eliminate these services and would surround the current buildings in a U-shaped pattern. The construction site would be our current parking lots and pool area parallel to Beach 108th St. along Rockaway Beach Blvd. and then parallel to Beach 105th St.

The immediate burden would be on the residents living here on the construction site and the change to our quality of life regarding noise, parking, recreation, air flow and sunlight. There will be a negative impact to the neighborhood and Rockaway community overall. As neighbors, we experience sharing limited infrastructure and resources such as schools, hospitals, transportation, only three main roadways that have been redesigned to limit traffic especially affecting commuting, emergency vehicles and evacuations, parking, sewage treatment, electric and water.

As a seaside community, we are also looking into the sustainability and the environmental impact this type of development can create.

We need to unite as a community to prevent this rezoning and development in our backyard.

We need your support and commitment to join together in fighting ALMA Realty who are negligent landlords with deep pockets.
