3 On 3 By the Sea Set for Sept. 7

Next Saturday, September 7 will be the 6th Annual 3 on 3 By The Sea basketball tournament at St. Francis de Sales. The event was started in 2014 by local basketball legend Clare Droesch and her good friend Brian Bagley, during her battle with Stage 4 breast cancer. Droesch always remained involved and engaged with younger players, during and following a career that began locally in CYO, reached All-American status at Christ the King HS, and All-Big East Status at Boston College, where her number has been retired. Injuries cut her professional career short, so she turned to coaching including at Vanderbilt and St. John’s, before a return to high school that was closer to her heart, at Scholars Academy, St. Edmund, and finally back at Christ the King, where she continued to coach while battling her toughest opponent.

Last year’s 3 on 3 was particularly emotional following her passing in May. The turnout was tremendous and established the Clare Droesch Scholarship Fund through the stewardship of The Graybeards. High School scholarships were awarded to John Leahy and Kathleen Conti upon graduation from St. Francis de Sales, with scholarship donations made to Christ the King and Boston College as well.

A similar turnout is expected next Saturday at St. Francis de Sales schoolyard. The day will begin with a free clinic for grades 6 and under at 10 a.m. The games will then begin with grades 3 to 4 from 10-11:30 a.m., grades 5-8 from 12-1:30 p.m., and the high school and open divisions from 2-3:30 p.m. The festivities will include a DJ, 50/50, raffles, and pizza provided by Whit’s End. Player registration is $50 each and the registration form is available online at www.thegraybeards.com. All players must be fully registered 30 minutes before their group begins play. There is a $10 fee for non-playing adult spectators to be part of the event, $5 for ages 7-13 and free for those 6 and under. Everyone is encouraged to attend. There will also be apparel for sale to support the event and the scholarship fund. Don’t miss 3 on 3 By The Sea!
