Seven years in business, seven years as an award-winning newspaper! The Rockaway Times took home two awards in the New York Press Association’s 2020 Better Newspaper Contest.
In a virtual awards ceremony on Thursday, April 8 and Friday, April 9, the New York Press Association announced the winners of its 2020 Better Newspaper Contest. As NYPA President Michelle Rea said this year’s contest was one of the best yet, with 2,440 terrific entries from 151 newspapers across the state.
In this year’s contest, The Rockaway Times was awarded third place for Best Use of Video for Editor Katie McFadden’s “Christmas in New York” tribute that we post to our social media pages each year. In the judge’s comments, they said, “Anyone who views this video thinks Holiday Cheer!” McFadden creates this video around the holidays, featuring video clips and photos of holiday happenings around town, set to “Christmas in New York” by Shilelagh Law.
The Rockaway Times was also awarded third place for best Picture Story, with a spread featuring post-Hurricane Sandy scenes taken by Larry Moore and the late Laura Deckelman, and what those areas look like eight years after the storm, in photos taken by Katie McFadden. In their comments, the judge said, “Great way to show the community the progress that has been made as everyone continues to recover from the storm.”BLOG COMMENTS POWERED BY DISQUS
