This past Saturday, December 11, the NYC Parks Department hosted the Rockaway Beach tree lighting right on Shore Front Parkway and Beach 94th Street. Despite the gloomy weather, it didn’t stop the holiday cheer. Families from all over Rockaway attended this festive event that even included a mini train ride, reminiscent of an old Lionel train going around a Christmas tree.
Families were able to partake in crafts and fun activities with the highlight being a ride aboard the Rockaway Express, a mini train that circled around the parking lot. Children and even adults (including this reporter) got all aboard to enjoy the fun and celebrate the holiday season. Children rode the train multiple times and could not get enough of it. “The train ride was fun, and it had a little bump at the end which made it really fun when we jumped up,” one young Rockaway local, Blessing Adewale said.
A tent with free hot chocolate being served helped keep everyone warm and tummies happy. Christmas music was playing while everyone enjoyed their time. When sunset came around, it was time to countdown for the lights to be turned on. The tree lighting included multiple lit pine trees that border the parking lot, flower light fixtures and a giant inflatable snowman. Everyone cheered and was excited to see the lights when they came on. “We are excited to add some color and light to the beach in the wintertime,” NYC Parks Rockaway Administrator Eric Peterson said.
