Rockaway’s Chef Julia Steinberg to Helm The Dropout at Riis

Get ready foodie lovers! Riis Park Beach Bazaar is off to a new season in the off season with The Dropout, a new and exciting restaurant headed by Rockaway’s born-and-bred Chef Julia Steinberg.

Steinberg’s impressive background includes running local kitchens, including Rockaway Seafood, Red Hook’s Lobster Pound, this past summer’s popular Bay 9 standout, Rockaway Clam Bar, and the ever-notorious, but sorely missed, Whitney Aycock’s Whit’s End, which was booted from Riis by the National Park Service in late July (Miss Whit? You can still find his food at Old Man Chill near the marina in Arverne. For a location hint, check out whitsendrockaway on Instagram).

Steinberg accelerated her culinary training at Chef’s Club New York under renowned Chef Didier Elena, where she studied a more traditional approach to fine dining. Steinberg is also well known for her regular solo pop-ups at local popular eating establishments, which sell out after announcements of her upcoming presence in the kitchen.

Over the years, Steinberg said that she developed her own personal touch of service and farm-to-table consciousness, which became reflected in her menu design and private dining experiences.

The Dropout’s grand opening is this Friday, September 29, and will feature recipes from Steinberg’s personal playbook. The menu will change weekly, rotating seasonal offerings such as fresh carpaccio tartare, sautéed pork fat edamame, fried spicy chicken sandwiches, heirloom tomato with garlic sauce, charred broccolini, whole fried porgy and much more!

Each off season, Riis Park Beach Bazaar transforms Rockaway’s Riis summer hub at the iconic Bay 9 Art Deco pavilion into a gorgeous seaside destination for curated food and drink with massive flat screen TVs showing football, hockey, basketball and more within a heated dining room. Plus, if you would rather gaze outside, lap up the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean while you feast.

Heading into its third off season, RPBB has established itself as one of NYC’s premiere oceanfront dining and event spaces, boosting Rockaway as the hottest foodie destination and a reason to visit the beaches year-round. The Dropout will continue RPBB’s goal of making Riis the beachside place to be throughout the year.

In addition to The Dropout, there will also be one-off, fun programming throughout the entire off season including the third annual Oktoberfest dubbed as “the first and only oceanfront Oktoberfest in NYC!” Check it out this Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1 and next Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8.

Other activities in the works include karaoke, game nights, music from local and visiting artists, a local holiday market and more! — Giving both locals and Rockaway's visitors even more reason to visit Riis year-round.

The Dropout’s initial hours will be Wednesdays through Mondays, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. with longer weekend hours and bar specials offered throughout the football season. Brunch service will be on weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Note that parking is free through Memorial Day 2018.
