RAA’s Big Splash!
By Dan Guarino
With a splash of color and
a dash of excitement and
sound, the Rockaway Artists
Alliance launched its latest
exhibition on Sunday, Sep-
tember 18.
ARTSplash 2016, the 16th
annual incarnation of the
multimedia exhibition which
has been one of RAA’s biggest
events of the year, will be on
view through October 16 at
the T-7 Gallery at Fort Tilden.
The wide range of works re-
flects everything from paint-
ing to assemblage sculpture,
glass work, textile arts, water
color, photography and more.
“ARTSplash is RAA’s annual
salon style show,” RAA Exhi-
bitions co-chairperson Tracey
Green said. “We had a fantastic
opening on Sunday. But there
are plenty of chances to see the
show during our gallery hours
Saturdays and Sundays from 12
p.m. to 4 p.m. through October.
“It features the work of 38
artists in several mediums.
One piece I find incredibly
unique to the show is a sculp-
ture of a headdress made out
of plush stuffed animals by
artist Lauren Genutis.”
The one hundred or so peo-
ple who came to the opening
reacted very positively to the
exhibition, with many com-
menting that the quality of
the works gets better each
year.
A number of the artists
were on hand for the opening
reception. A mix of veteran
exhibitors and those showing
with RAA for the first time, got
to meet and greet gallery-go-
ers and talk about their work.
Among the newer artists
was photographer Robert
Mintzes. Showing for the first
time in ARTSplash, his piece
“Distance” won Best in Pho-
tography. Mintzes and his
wife, Jessica, had visited the
gallery earlier. However he
was not on hand to accept the
award. Turns out both Mintz-
tes were playing starring
roles in the Rockaway The-
atre Company’s production
of “Wait Until Dark” right
across the parking lot from
the gallery.
Also attending was long-
time RAA member and artist
Martha Killian, who is cred-
ited with originally coming
up with “ARTSplash” as the
name for the show.
“Charles Markis of the Na-
tional Park Service paid us
the honor of judging ART-
Splash this year,” Green said.
