An End in Sight
When contractor Skanska
finished the boardwalk in July,
they seemed to neglect an im-
portant end piece. All summer,
the ramp of the boardwalk end
at Beach 126th street was in-
complete, with the ramp end-
ing in sand instead of making a
connection to concrete. Many,
especially bikers, found them-
selves abruptly getting caught
in the sand as they came off the
boardwalk, making for a dan-
gerous stop. Some avoided the
entrance completely by utiliz-
ing the ramps on Beach 125th
Street. Just as the summer has
come to an end, so has the
ramp debacle. The contractor
finally got to work earlier this
week to connect the ramp to
the sidewalk.
When asked about the project,
a spokesperson for the Parks
Department said, “The concrete
flatwork will connect to the
sidewalk on either side of Beach
126th Street. There will also be a
curb cut in the center of the pla-
za making a seamless connec-
tion to the street for emergency
and park vehicles to access the
boardwalk and beach.”
