The B.R.I.D.G.E. Hosts Fun & Flicks for Back to School

On Saturday, August 31, The B.R.I.D.G.E. Family Enrichment Center hosted its second annual Fun & Flicks back-to-school event in the Rockaways.

This community celebration was co-sponsored by NYC Family & Youth Peer Support Queens Alliance, Vibrant Emotional Health, Far Rock Greek Council, and The Dream Manufacturers.

Families entered The B.R.I.D.G.E. on Beach 92nd Street, to see it transformed into a vibrant atmosphere created by Concorito Party Rentals, featuring a stilt performer juggling and blowing bubbles while DJ Peter Vibe played festive music. The event included face painting, magic shows, games, balloons, a popcorn machine, and cotton candy. They also enjoyed food options provided by Meat Up Grill, Batesy’s BBQ, Althea’s Tropical Delights, and La Playa.

The event included many interactive aspects as Sharmeika Davis-Boyd of QIKY KIDZ led a story reading of her new book, helping children navigate their upcoming school year relationships. Shamika and Shaymon Simmons, two dedicated members of the Bridge Builder Committee also led a painting activity, letting children’s creativity flow.

As guests toured the facility, they were able to stop by tables hosted by community organizations such as Queens Public Library, NY Foundling, and Council For Airport Opportunity. Attendees collected stickers from each organization on their tour sheets and, upon completion, received children’s book bags filled with school supplies.

More than 100 pre-filled book bags with essential school supplied were distributed to children so they’re ready for the new school year. School-age children left the event with newfound confidence, thanks to free haircuts provided by Clai Sculpts, J Sharpz the Barber, and Smoove Elegance.

The event ended with a movie night featuring a 16 ft. inflatable screen and projector provided by Quick House Party Rentals. Attendees enjoyed a screening of “Inside Out 2,” chosen through a community vote.

“Fun & Flicks 2 was a resounding success, blending entertainment, community engagement, and back-to-school readiness,” director Curtis Turney-Rentas said. “The event fostered a sense of community and provided valuable resources for families as they prepared for the new school year. We are grateful to all our sponsors, partners, and volunteers who made this event possible.”
