Man Goes Missing During Late-Night Swim

On Saturday night, July 12, a man went for a late-night swim with friends but never got out of the water. The search is ongoing.
At around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, a 37-year-old man went into the water at around Beach 97th Street with friends. His friends made it back to the beach and reported their friend missing. NYPD, FDNY and Coast Guard members began an extensive search in the dark with helicopters, boats and emergency divers, but they were unable to find the missing man. The search was called off after about two hours on Saturday and resumed in the morning on Sunday. As we go to press, it is unclear if his body was recovered.
As a reminder, lifeguards are only on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer. Please do not swim when and where lifeguards are not on duty.
