Pop-Up Carnival

On Friday, August 15 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., head to Beach 21st Street Plaza (1047 Beach 21st Street) for a preview of Queens Caribbean Carnival (August 23) with steel pan activities for kids, dancing and more.

 

Basket Weaving Workshop

On Saturday, August 16 at 11 a.m., head to Edgemere Farm (385 Beach 45th Street) to learn introductory basket weaving using locally-sourced plant materials with artist/educator Rebecca Naegele. RSVP at: www.edgemerefarm.org/events

 

Kids in Motion: Tie Dye

On Saturday, August 16 at 11 a.m., head to Beach 59th Playground by the boardwalk to join staff for a fun session of tie dye. Bring your own new white T-shirts to dye. There will be a limited supply of youth-sized shirts available at the event. For more information, call 718-393-7370.

 

Rockaway Peace Treaty

Back to School Jubilee

On Saturday, August 16 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., head to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church (348 Beach 71st Street) for a Back to School event featuring bouncy houses, food, games, free haircuts and braiding, face painting, raffles, vendors and more.

 

Jamaica Bay Kayaking

On Saturday, August 16 at 1 p.m., head to Garden by the Bay (480 Beach 43rd Street) to join JBRPC for an open kayak paddle in Jamaica Bay, around Norton Basin. Rangers will lead kayak instruction.

 

20th Annual Shorebird Festival

On Sunday, August 17 at 10 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join Gateway National Recreation Are, American Littoral Society, NYC Bird Alliance, NYC Plover Project, and Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy for the 20th Annual Shorebird Festival—a free, fun-filled event for birders of all levels and families of all ages. Enjoy bird walks, talks, kids activities and more.

 

Rockaway Refresh at B. 17th

On Monday, August 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., head to Beach 98th and the boardwalk for a shoreline cleanup with JBRPC. Sign a waiver prior to joining at www.jbrpc.org/events

 

Birding for Beginners

On Sundays through August 31 at 2 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a ranger to take a nature walk, and learn the basics of bird identification. Bug spray and sunscreen are recommended, binoculars available.

 

Yoga on the Beach

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m., head to Beach 102nd Street for yoga on the beach with Soupy. For info, call 347-804-2559

 

Beach Yoga with Joann

Uplifted Dance Class

On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., head to the Beach 32nd Street Football Field (Beach 32nd and the boardwalk) for a free dance workout class with Miss Dawn.

 

Free Art Classes

On Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., head to 205 Beach 96th Street to enjoy free mixed media art classes in conjunction with Ordervision, NYFA and others.

 

Zumba Under the Stars

On Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. on Beach 17th and the boardwalk and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Beach 108th Hockey Rink, join Lisa G for this free high-energy dance workout class through Aug. 28.
