Santa Sleigh Run Comes to Town

On Saturday, December 20, Santa and his sleigh could be heard all around town as MakeMyMotherProud’s 13th Annual Santa Sleigh Run came through. With jingle bells and festive music blasting from the mobile sleigh decked out with Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Gingerbread Man, elves, a Christmas tree and more, it was hard to miss the festive cheer. The sleigh made stops at Redfern, Rockaway Village, Beach 41st, Beach 56th, 71-15 Beach Channel Drive, Hammels and Beach 116th Street, with volunteers handing out toys and other goodies to kids along the way, and stopping for photos and dance parties.

“For 13 years, the Makemymotherproud Santa Sleigh Run has been my favorite Christmas gift,” organizer Lakia Echols said. “The smiles, singing, dancing, and community spirit never fail to warm my heart (and bring a few tears).  Thanks to the amazing VP Antoneke Weatherspoon for all your years of dedication. Shout out to all the sponsors and volunteers who make the day possible.”

The Santa Sleigh Run was escorted by Rockaway’s local NYPD precincts to make sure everyone stayed safe and traffic moved smoothly.  “The Make My Mother Proud Organization of Far Rockaways organized a Santa Sleigh Run, and we were delighted to guide the sleigh and lead the event,” the 100th Precinct said. “It was a fantastic experience visiting multiple locations, spreading joy, smiles, and festive cheer all across Rockaway.”
