St. Camillus / St. Virgilius MVPs of the Week
The St. Camillus/ St. Virgilius basketball program is underway with about 150 local kids from 4th grade to 8th grade, playing in the Girls and Boys leagues. Here are some standout players this week.
Girls League
Ava Masullo
Ava was the league’s leading scorer this year. But that’s not all she can do. Her defense is intense and she’s so quick she seems to get to every loose ball. This week was a thrilling game where her team trailed by 10 heading into the fourth quarter. That’s when Ava really stepped up. She scored 13 of her 22 points in the last quarter. Her team finally took the lead with about two minutes on the clock. Ava sealed the game with a huge steal and a breakaway layup with only seconds remaining. This amazing 3-point win sent the team into the championship game next week.
Junior Boys League
Connor Chavanne

Connor’s team was missing a few key players this week, and he knew he had to really step up his game in order for his team to have a chance, and he stepped it up big time. This is what great players do. They come through when you need them the most. He was ripping down rebounds on both ends of the court and playing smothering defense. He ended up scoring 29 points, which was a season high for him. His incredible performance was the main reason his team was able to pull out the victory which sent them into the championship game next week.
Senior Boys League
James King

James completely dominated this game. His was tearing down rebounds on both ends of the court and his defense was amazing. The other team could not do anything in the paint because James was rejecting or harassing every shot attempt by anyone who tried to score from the inside. Then he turned his talents to the offensive end. He scored 19 points, which was his season high, in the biggest game (semi-final) of the year so far. His extremely impressive performance led his team to a victory and a place in the championship game next week.
