D27 Schools Showcase Civics for All

On Monday, May 18, School District 27 hosted a Civics End-of-Year Showcase at P.S. 197 The Ocean School, located on Hicksville Road in Far Rockaway.

This year’s theme was “Honoring 250 Years of Democracy Through Student Voice and Leadership.” The event brought together approximately 500 students from 44 District 27 schools to celebrate civic learning, student voice, and youth leadership. Students presented soapbox speeches, participatory budgeting projects, civic action projects, and other Civics for All work connected to issues they care about in their schools and communities.

Superintendent David Norment shared, “Our students are showing us what civic engagement looks like in action. They are not waiting until adulthood to care about their communities — they are already thinking critically, speaking up, and working toward solutions.”
