And Another Sudden Stop

In another round of Sudden Stop, the latest stop signs appeared on Newport Avenue and Beach 130th Street for traffic going in each direction. The sign was first noticed on the morning of Thursday, July 17, but as the NYC Department of Transportation doesn’t seem to give a heads up before placing stop signs, several people have been missing it all week.
We posted a notice to our Facebook page to let people know, and most people welcomed this stop sign as the intersection near the Harbor Light, where many people drive down to turn around on to Beach 129th Street, has been a tricky crossing with blind spots.
This latest stop sign comes after the DOT installed some at Beach 112th and Rockaway Beach Blvd. in April, Newport Avenue and Beach 135th in January, and Beach 117th and Rockaway Beach Blvd. in March 2024.
In each instance, the DOT provided little detail as to why these stop signs are installed. When the stop signs went up around Newport Avenue and Beach 135th, they simply told The Rockaway Times, they “received public input about the need for stop signs at this location.” After conducting a study, the DOT determined that stop signs were needed in the area.
