Broad Channel Local Drafted to the MLB

A hometown boy has made it to the big leagues. During the third round of the Major League Baseball draft on Monday, July 15, Broad Channel’s own Mike Sirota was picked by the Cincinnati Reds.
Sirota, 21, attends Northeastern University, where he’s had a .324 average over three seasons. He’s the third highest draft pick in Northeastern’s history. At Northeastern, he holds two records for the most runs in a season (73 in 2023) and most walks in a season (59 in 2024). Sirota was drafted 492nd overall in the 2021 MLB Draft by the Dodgers but opted to go to Northeastern instead.
He was the 87th overall draft pick on Monday. And professional baseball is in his blood. Sirota is the grandnephew of MLB Hall of Famer Whitey Ford, who was a famous pitcher for the NY Yankees, and had great influence on Sirota’s baseball trajectory, even giving him advice to focus on batting more than pitching, after suffering injuries from his career. Ford died in 2020.
The 6’3 centerfielder may be a superstar baseball player, but he also spent some time playing football for the BCAC Shamrocks when he was younger.
