Chanukah Around the Rock

Happy Chanukah! On Sunday, December 18, the Festival of Lights begins with the lighting of the first candle on menorahs across the globe. And there will be several local events happening to mark the occasion throughout the eight nights.

The first celebration takes place on Sunday, December 18 at 1 p.m. Head to 613 Beach 9th Street where Rockaway Nassau Patrol, Hatzalah, JCCRP and others will be hosting a Chanukah toy giveaway for all children. There will be gifts, doughnuts, fun and more!

Then, also on Sunday, December 18, at 3 p.m. is the Far Rockaway Menorah Lighting. Join RDRC at the Greenspace intersection of Mott Avenue and Central Avenue for the celebration. The Mitzvah Tank will be there distributing menorahs and candles to the community, plus there will be music and dancing.

And lastly on Sunday, December 18, at 6 p.m., West End Temple (147-02 Newport Ave) is hosting a Chanukah event with a musical celebration in the sanctuary, featuring their West End Band and kids followed by a latke dinner in the gym. Bring your menorah and a vegetarian side dish to share. To RSVP, call the Temple office at 718-634-0301 by December 16.

On Tuesday, December 20 at 5 p.m., Councilwoman Joann Ariola and the Rockaway Civic Association are teaming up to host the Beach 116th Menorah lighting. Head to Beach 116th (near City MD) for the lighting celebration. Temple Beth-El will be providing jelly doughnuts for all.

On Wednesday, December 21 at 7 p.m., Temple Beth-El will also be hosting a livestreamed Chanukah lighting with Cantor Jeff Wolk and his Latka Boys Band performing on the fourth night of Chanukah. To check out the service, see: bethelrockaway.org/live-stream
