 High Tide

Happy Thanksgiving! We are very grateful for our loyal readers and contributors, as well as our awesome advertisers who have been supportive this year (and every year). We wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving and hope you all have an enjoyable and well-deserved long weekend. On the other side of the long weekend, we will be in December (wow!), and the busy season will have begun with the tree lightings and holiday get-togethers in full force.

Here’s a big shout out to all those groups and individuals who take the time to run food drives and giveaways so that everyone in Rockaway has the opportunity to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

Next Monday, December 2, is the Beach 116th Street tree lighting. The event starts at 4 p.m. and the tree lighting is at 6:30 p.m. Come get in the holiday spirit by meeting Santa and Mrs. Claus and watching some performances by the PS 114 Glee Club and House on the Rock Church.

Local businesses are also getting in the spirit. On Saturday, November 30 at 6 p.m., Callie’s on Beach 129th Street will light their Christmas tree and host a special visit from Santa Claus. On Thursday. December 5, Santa Claus will also be stopping by Happy Jacks near Beach 108th for their tree lighting ceremony from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

And while you are enjoying your long weekend, maybe you want to do some of your holiday shopping. Well, you can start by checking the pages of The Rockaway Times! Many of our advertisers are offering Black Friday and holiday specials for this week and the holiday season. Whether it be sales or parties, please look right here in The Rockaway Times for some pretty great deals. When you take advantage of the deals our great advertisers offer, be sure to tell them you saw their ad in The Rockaway Times. For that, we are very thankful!

When is it appropriate to put up your Christmas decorations? Slowly but surely, more and more lights have been popping up around the peninsula. Some say that it might be a little early — Thanksgiving fanatics are up in arms — but we think it is wonderful! It gets dark so early these days and we are grateful for the lights to brighten things up a little bit. Doesn’t hurt to get into the holiday spirit a little early either!

Councilwoman Joann Ariola is hosting a Christmas Pet Supply Drive for our local animal rescues, who need basic supplies during this busy holiday season. Even the smallest donation like a roll of paper towels or dish soap can make a difference for those caring for animals in need. If you have any donations to drop off, she is collecting at her Rockaway office (114-12 Beach Channel Drive) up to December 20.

Thanks to Nancy Re and her 5th grade class at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy for weighing in on last week’s McVeighing In. The class wrote about their own “Bare Necessities” in life, and we were lucky enough to receive some of their pieces. You can check them out on page 37.

Didn’t receive your Rockaway Times this week? Make sure to take another look! Moving forward, when the forecast calls for inclement weather, your home-delivered copy of the Rockaway Times will be inserted in the same bag as the coupon circular that usually accompanies the paper.
