High Tide

We’ve reached mid-July, and summer is in full swing. With so many events happening across the peninsula, it can be hard to keep track — and that’s where we come in!

Last Thursday night, the entire peninsula, decked out in red, white, and blue, were lined on the streets to welcome those visiting for Warrior Weekend. It was a beautiful show of patriotism and appreciation for those who have sacrificed so much for our country. A huge thank you to all the organizers and volunteers who made the weekend possible.

This past Saturday, July 12, saw an incredible turnout for the Fourth Annual Timmy Klein Beach Volleyball Tournament. Held in honor of fallen firefighter — and friend to many on the peninsula — Timmy Klein, who gave his life in the line of duty just over three years ago, the tournament featured some top-tier volleyball. All proceeds went to the Timothy P. Klein Foundation. Special thanks to Timmy’s family, friends, and the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to organize this amazing day. It truly was a memorable and meaningful celebration on the beach.

You don’t see this every day: The Port Authority has announced a 50% fare reduction for the JFK AirTrain. The fare is now $4.25 and will remain in effect through Labor Day. The goal is to encourage more travelers to use public transportation to the airport during these peak construction months.

If you were out and about in Breezy Point over the weekend, you may have spotted former Yankees (and Red Sox) star Johnny Damon. He was seen all around Breezy and even made a surprise appearance at the Men’s Softball League early Sunday morning, where he played for the Johnny Cakes softball team (who still lost, by the way).

Sal Y Lima, located at Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 90th Street, celebrated its grand opening last Thursday. The space looks fantastic, and the food and drinks are already drawing praise. It’s a welcome addition to the neighborhood — congratulations and welcome!

More good news on the local food front: Around this time last year, we shared the disappointing news that Thai Rock was up for sale. But just last week, a new sign went up announcing Similan on the Bay at the same waterfront location. We’re told they’ll be bringing Thai cuisine back to the peninsula. We’re look forward to its grand debut later this summer.

The Blarney in Breezy Point also held its grand reopening last Saturday — congrats to the new owners! The place looks amazing. And for those who have missed Whit’s End, you’ll be happy to know that Whit is now cooking at The Blarney.

Looking for a fun run this weekend? The Rockaway Track Club is hosting a 1-mile or 5K Run/Walk Bubble Run this Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Rockaway Beach Amphitheater (Beach 94th Street). Bubble stations will be blasting bubbles and foam throughout the course. For more info or to sign up, head to www.rockawaytc.org

We’ve just learned that a group of guys meet at Rogers every Thursday to solve the “Spot the Difference” cartoon from page 38 of the paper — no joke! Shout out to the Rogers crew for turning puzzle-solving into a weekly ritual!

Congrats to Rockaway Beach Bakery (87-10 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) on being award third best bakery in the borough by the Queens Chamber of Commerce!
