It seems like new stop signs have been popping up all over Rockaway lately. Just a heads-up—the latest additions are at the busy intersection of Newport Avenue and Beach 130th Street.

The wait is almost over! Our Rockaway Times Photo Contest judges will be convening soon to select the esteemed Top 10. If you haven’t already, be sure to head out to the boardwalk and check out the Top 30 entries on display in the Beach 90s, as well as the five Honorable Mentions at the ferry landing. We’ll announce the Top 10 soon, with the final winner to be revealed later in August.

Save the date! Saturday, August 2, marks the return of the Rockaway Sandcastle Contest. Councilwoman Joann Ariola will host the event on Beach 108th Street, with help from NYC Parks and The Rockaway Times. Registration is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and castle building will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Be sure to bring your own shovels and pails—supplies are limited. Contest categories include: ages 9 and under, ages 10 to 18, and ages 19 and up. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in each category, judged on creativity, detail, and originality.

The Graybeards Family Run is set for Friday, August 8, and there’s something for everyone! The schedule is as follows: Kids’ Run at 6:30 p.m., Special Olympians Run at 6:45 p.m., 1 Mile Run at 7 p.m., and 5K Run at 7:15 p.m. It’s always a fun night! For info, check out page 7 of this week’s paper.

Tuesday, August 5, is National Night Out (NNO) Against Crime. There will be free food and exhibits from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at O’Donohue Park (Beach 17th Street and the Boardwalk). The 100th Precinct will host its NNO celebration from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 94th and Beach 95th Streets, featuring food, rides, raffles, performances, and demos.

Saturday Night Lights (SNL) takes place every Saturday at the YMCA (207 Beach 73r Street), starting at 5 p.m. This free youth development program offers fun, safe, high-quality sports programming, with participation from the 100th Precinct’s youth officers. Middle school sessions: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and high school sessions: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Save the date. There will be a celebration for St. Camillus on Sunday, September 7 with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. and a reception right after in Springman Hall. The beloved church is slated to close by the end of the year.

A body was found on the Beach 98th St. shoreline in the early morning on Sunday, July 20. As we go to press, they have not been identified.
