 High Tide

Summer is in full swing! This time of year, it’s hard to keep track of all the different events going on around the peninsula … That’s why we’re here!

There have been a few shark sightings this past week on our beaches. It’s not just the lifeguards looking out for the sharks these days. The NYPD and FDNY are now using drones and robotics to monitor the water for swimmers in distress as well as looking out for sharks. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s … a drone!

The Third Annual Timmy Klein Beach Volleyball Tournament was held on Saturday, July 13. The tournament, held in honor of fallen firefighter and friend of many across the peninsula, Timmy Klein, who gave his life at a fire just over two years ago, featured some incredible volleyball. All proceeds raised went to the Timothy P. Klein Foundation. Thanks especially to Timmy’s family, friends and volunteers for their tireless work organizing this great event. It truly was an awesome day in honor of Timmy. And congratulations to the winners of the tournament: Fam + 2! We were glad to see some locals bring home the ‘ship!

If you turned on Good Day NY on Fox 5 NY last week, you saw a familiar face on with Rosanna Scotto and Curt Menefee. Councilwoman Joann Ariola was on with them, discussing the migration crisis and how it is impacting our city and the amount of money we are paying to shelter them. She was knowledgeable and great as usual.

We were sad to hear that Thai Rock is up for sale, but happy that the owner, Metta Kaskel, is ready to enjoy herself in retirement life. The waterfront property, including the restaurant and an apartment, is up for grabs to the highest bidder. Looking forward to seeing what comes next there.

Councilwoman Joann Ariola is hosting a Back-to-School Drive from July 15 to August 15. If you have pens, pencils, book bags, or other school supplies to help improve the lives of our local students, drop them off at her office at 114-12 Beach Channel Drive from Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Congratulations to Mike Sirota, a native of Broad Channel, who was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in this year’s MLB draft.

Kudos to the two fishermen that spotted and rescued 34-year-old Peter Ordane, who was treading water about two miles off the coast of NJ at 9 a.m. on Monday. Ordane claimed he been swept away by the water off of Breezy Point on Saturday night, but later reports said it was from Staten Island.

Jonathan Kravetz, who we featured a few weeks back, will be doing a book reading for “How We Were Before” at Peninsula Library on Beach 94th Street on Saturday, June 27 at 2 p.m.
