The Jewish Holidays and Some Sales Hints
By Robin Shapiro
The Rockaway real estate market will probably slow up during October due to the Jewish holidays. The HIGH HOLY DAYS begin with Rosh Hashanah which begins on Wednesday night, October 2, and ends on Friday night, October 4. No work permitted for the observant. The High Holy Days culminate with Yom Kippur, which begins on Friday night, October 11, and ends at nightfall on Saturday, October 12. No work permitted for the observant. Sukkot begins on Wednesday night, October 16, and ends at nightfall on October 23. No work on October 17 and 18 for the observant. Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah begin at night on October 23 and end on October 25 at night. No work permitted.
Sellers might want to try to help the sales process during October since not all real estate participants are observant Jewish people. Real estate doesn’t come to a complete halt during the month. Here are a few ideas:
- Consult with your broker to consider a lower listing price.
- Allow your broker to utilize a “for sale sign” on your property.
- Give your broker a key to your home.
- Allow your broker to host open houses. Note that local parking restrictions change on September 30. This will make it easier for open house visitors to park.
