Sunset Kayak Tour

On Friday, August 1 at 5:30 p.m., head to Vernam Barbadoes Basin at Beach 75th and Amstel Blvd. to join JBRPC and the Community Boathouse for a sunset kayak tour exploring Jamaica Bay’s Subway Island. Kayaks, paddles and PFDs provided free. Register at www.jbrpc.org/events

Stargazing with Amateur Astronomers Association

On Friday, August 1 at 8:45 p.m., head to Floyd Bennett Field near the Community Garden for free monthly observing sessions. Cancelled if raining or overcast.

Rockaway Sandcastle Contest

On Saturday, August 2, head to Beach 108th for some sandcastle contest fun! Registration is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The contest starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 1 p.m. Judging to follow. Age category 9 and under, 10 to 18 and 19 and up. Prizes for first, second and third place winners.

Rockaway Refresh at B. 106th

On Friday, August 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to Beach 106th and the boardwalk for a shoreline cleanup with JBRPC.

Birding on the Beach

On Saturday, August 2 at 10 a.m., head to the Arverne East Nature Preserve and Beach 44th and the boardwalk to join NYC Parks and National Park Service rangers to explore the shoreline for birds like plovers, terns, and oystercatchers.

Riis Landing Kayaking for Beginners

On Saturday, August 2 at 1 p.m., head to Riis Landing for kayaking for beginners. Open to ages 6 and up with an adult. Dress to get wet and bring water. Kayaks, paddles, lifejackets and instruction provided.

Seashells of Jamaica Bay

On Sunday, August 3 at 11 a.m., head to Sunset Cove at W. 22nd St. in Broad Channel to join NYC Parks and National Park Service rangers to explore the shores of Jamaica Bay for shells and learn about clams, oysters, horseshoe crabs and more.

Rockaway Refresh at B. 59

On Monday, August 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., head to Beach 59th and the boardwalk for a shoreline cleanup with JBRPC after the busy weekend.

National Night Out 101st

On Tuesday, August 5 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., head to O’Donohue Park at Beach 17th St. for the 101st Precinct NNO. Enjoy free food, resources, music, performances, Zumba and more.

National Night Out 100th

On Tuesday, August 5 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., head to Beach 94th parking lot for the 100th Precinct’s NNO. Rides, games, food, performances, raffles, resources and more.

Birding for Beginners

On Sundays through August 31 at 2 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a ranger to take a nature walk, and learn the basics of bird identification. Bug spray and sunscreen are recommended, binoculars available.

Yoga on the Beach

On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m., head to Beach 102nd Street for yoga on the beach with Soupy. For info, call 347-804-2559.

Zumba Under the Stars

On Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. through Aug. 28, head to the Beach 108th Hockey Rink to join Lisa G for this free high-energy dance workout class.
