Catch a Cure

On Saturday, October 5 at 9 a.m., head to the boardwalk at Beach 116th Street to walk in memory and in honor of all of those impacted by cancers. Advance registration at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club (533 Beach 126th St.) on Thursday, October 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

 

Beach 116th Fall Fest

On Sunday, October 5, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., head to Beach 116th Street to enjoy a day of kids’ activities from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., a pumpkin patch, vendors, live music, and more.

 

Foraging with Steve Brill

On Sunday, October 4 from 10 a.m. to noon, join “Wildman” Steve Brill for a free session on plant identification, the natural habitat of the Rockaways, and all the best wild foods of the seashore. Meet at RISE, 58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd. Registration is required at www.riserockaway.org . This event is rain or shine.

 

8th Annual Raptorama

On Sunday, October 5 at 10 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join NPS, JBRPC and others to learn all about the birds of prey of Jamaica Bay. See some amazing raptors up close during two live demonstrations led by the Wildlife Center of Long Island and go on walks with park rangers and partners to look at the raptors that travel through Jamaica Bay on their fall migration.

 

Full Harvest Moon Hike

On Monday, October 6 at 6:30 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a park ranger for a hike to hear about a traditional name for this full moon and look for signs of the story it represents. This is an all-weather walk, so dress for the conditions.

 

Supermoon Stargazing

On Tuesday, October 7 at 7 p.m., head to Floyd Bennett Field to join the Amateur Astronomers next to the Community Garden for night viewing of the Supermoon! Cancelled if rain.

 

Rockaway Beach Civic Association Meeting

On Thursday, October 9 at 7 p.m., head to the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) for the monthly RBCA meeting. Guest speaker District Attorney Melinda Katz.

 

Birding for Beginners

On Saturdays through October 25 at 10:30 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a ranger to take a nature walk, and learn the basics of bird identification. Binoculars available.

 

Cardio Punch

On Saturdays at 11 a.m., head to Beach 60th and the boardwalk to join Gloria for Cardio Punch, a total body workout for all levels. Punch, hook, and kick to motivating, high-energy music that progress into heart-pumping combinations.

 

Sea Chapel

On Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., head to RISE (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) to see work by artist Susannah Ray. The multipanel installation of abstract ocean views was created from Rockaway Beach images from her larger body of work To the Sea, To the Sea, To the Sea. And you can meet the artist on Wednesday, October 8 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at RISE.

 

Free Art Classes

On Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., head to 205 Beach 96th Street to enjoy free mixed media art classes in conjunction with Ordervision, NYFA and others.

 

Uplifted Dance Class

On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., head to the Beach 32nd Street Football Field (Beach 32nd and the boardwalk) for a free dance workout class with Miss Dawn.

 

Yin Yoga & Sound Bath

On Saturday, October 4, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., join Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach (1-81 Beach 116th St., above Carvel) for a special Warm Yin & Sound Bath. This 90-minute class combines Yin Yoga with live flute, crystal bowls and gong for deep relaxation. No experience needed. Cost: $45 pre-register/$50 at the door. Room will be warm.
