On late Monday afternoon, July 28, the body of a man was pulled out of the water at Beach 25th Street. This comes after a 22-year-old man went missing in the waters off Beach 20th Street on Friday. As we go to press, the body found in the water has not been identified, so it is unclear if the incidents were connected.
On Friday, July 25, just after 6 p.m., emergency services responded to Beach 20th Street after a young man was reported missing after swimming in the area. According to Gothamist, Kaitlin Krause, founder of Rising Tide Effect, a nonprofit that teaches swimming and water safety, was in the area to provide a swim safety instruction when she heard the sirens. Krause told the outlet that she was in touch with the young man’s family and that he was an immigrant from Niger, who took his second day off work in two years, to go to the beach that day.
NYPD, FDNY and Coast Guard continued to search for the young man, with Nassau County services also aiding in the search over the weekend.
Just before 4 p.m. on Monday, police responded to a 911 call and recovered an unconscious and unresponsive man off Beach 25th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. As noted, the person has not been identified yet, so it is unclear if this was the young man who went missing on Friday evening.
This comes after a 37-year-old man went missing in the water off Beach 97th Street at around 11 p.m. on July 12. On July 20, a body was found on Beach 98th Street. Police say the body was heavily decomposed and has still not been identified.
