2025 Summer Classic is Underway

By Keith “Bugsy” Goldberg
It has been a wet start to the 41st St Francis Summer Classic. Since the Tim Klein Mens Open Division began on June 17, rain has cancelled all or parts of seven dates of play. Nonetheless, most of the games have now been rescheduled and play is proceeding.
With Summer Classic director Keith Goldberg reducing his workload, Marianne “Skippy” Doyle, Joe Courtney, and Mike Friedman have become the nightly supervisors in the Fr. Grogan Memorial schoolyard, while JoJo O’Grady provides logistical support. This year’s classic consists of the following divisions and directors:
Skippy Doyle leads the co-ed second grade division. The six teams have their games in Msgr. Bracken gym at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Boys Grammar Junior with eight teams play on Mondays at 5:45 p.m. on the four schoolyard courts. Ed Dennis and Justin Flanagan are the directors. Girls Grammar Junior has nine teams and play Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. outside. Joe Visco and Tommy Coates lead this group.
Greg Hearn and Curtis Borgstede handle the Boys Grammar Middle division with 10 teams. Games are generally on Mondays and Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. with rainout reschedules on other days. Six teams make up the Girls Grammar Senior division with games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Kerry Brady and Siobhan Fitzgerald guide the division. Dee Tubridy and Mike McCann direct the 10 teams of the Boys Grammar Senior division, who play on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
The Boys High School division has 12 teams playing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Marty McManus, Mike Friedman, and John Moran once again lead the way. Terence Mullin handles the four team Girls High School division which plays in the gym on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
Jimmy Mullen and Kathryn Gibson now lead the eight team Clare Droesch Women’s Open league, assisted by longtime director Bryanne Flaherty. Games are in the gym on Mondays and Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Keith Goldberg continues with the Tim Klein Mens Open league on Thursday nights at 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Eight teams compete in each of two divisions.
Keep watching the weather reports and head over to St. Francis to watch the 41st Summer Classic.
