Jamaica Bay Book Club
On Friday, September 19 at 2 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for book club! Read selections of nature-themed literature, and together think critically about nature literature. Email jdgreen@nps.gov or call the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at 718-318-4340 in advance if interested.
Jamaica Bay Cleanup
On Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to Dubos Point Wildlife Sanctuary at De Costa Ave. and Beach 65th St. to join in a shoreline cleanup of Jamaica Bay. Rain or shine.
Thrift Sale
On Saturday, September 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., head to First Congregational Church (320 Beach 94th Street) for a thrift sale to help support the church. New and used fall and winter items, $2 clothing, shoes, Christmas items, holiday decor, houseware, toys, pocketbooks, pet items, jewelry and more. Hawk Watch
On Saturday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m., head to the overlook above Battery Harris at Fort Tilden to join a park ranger for the chance to see birds of prey like osprey, peregrine falcons, bald eagles and more as they fly overhead during peak fall bird migration. Learn to identify them by silhouette and at rest.
Beachcombing with a Ranger
On Saturday, September 20 at 11 a.m., head to the flagpole at Bay 9 on the Riis Park boardwalk to take a walk on the beach with a park ranger to see what the shore has to offer!
Climate Week Planting
On Sunday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to Beach 44th St. and Edgemere Ave. to join RISE and Surfrider for dune restoration. Help plant native plants and shrubs to build and restore a natural protective buffer. Students can receive community service hours. Bring paperwork from schools. Rain or shine.
Defensive Driving Class
On Tuesdays, September 30 and October 7 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., head to the St. Camillus Cottage, adjacent St. Camillus Church (99-15 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) for your 6-Hour Defensive Driving Course. RAA’s Portal Exhibit
On Saturdays and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., head to the sTudio 7 Gallery in Fort Tilden for the Rockaway Artist Alliance’s latest exhibit in conjunction with 4head’s Portal: Art With Sand In Its Teeth. Enjoy the work from 36 artists. Open through September 21.
Birding for Beginners
On Saturdays through September 27 at 2 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to join a ranger to take a nature walk, and learn the basics of bird identification. Binoculars available.
Cardio Punch
On Saturdays at 11 a.m., head to Beach 60th and the boardwalk to join Gloria for Cardio Punch, a total body workout for all levels. Punch, hook, and kick to motivating, high-energy music that progress into heart-pumping combinations.
Yoga on the Beach
On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m., head to Beach 102nd Street for yoga on the beach with Soupy. For info, call 347-804-2559.
Free Art Classes
On Mondays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., head to 205 Beach 96th Street to enjoy free mixed media art classes in conjunction with Ordervision, NYFA and others.
Uplifted Dance Class
On Mondays and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., head to the Beach 32nd Street Football Field (Beach 32nd and the boardwalk) for a free dance workout class with Miss Dawn.
