Clattermouuuth’s Music of the Week: Q&A with The Orangtangs (Part 2)

By Andrew Kohler

Welcome back to Clattermouuuth’s Music of the Week, curating Rockaway’s music taste one week at a time. This week, I’ll be sharing the second half of my first interview ever with the indie, folk rock band, The Orangtangs.

Q: Where do you find inspiration?

Sam: Hearing good music always puts us in a mood to create (e.g., The Beatles, Tyler, The Creator, Steve Lacy, Richard Swift, etc.) Being interested in a girl is probably the main one for me; that’s probably when some of the best stuff comes out for me.

Branden: I think it’s hard to answer a question like this without mentioning The Beatles. I’d say they were my inspiration when starting to write songs, which they still are, but right now I’d say TV Girl, Jordana, Wallows, and Tyler, The Creator are my inspiration.

Q: Any new music soon? Anything you’d like to promote?

Sam: We’ve been working on the mega album for about a year now, but we’ll probably release another single in between it all. Check out our latest single, “Hope,” with incredible sax playing and lyrics by Branden. Great stuff.

Branden: Yes, we are working on an album right now. If I were to promote something, I’d like to promote our songs “Somethin Blue” and “Hope.”

Q: What music have you been listening to most recently?

Sam: Richard Swift, Chase Ceglie, The Sha La Da’s, Dogboss558, and Quasimoto. Chase Ceglie needs way more attention than he has right now.

Branden: I’ve been listening to a bunch of different stuff, but what I have on repeat are songs from TV Girl like “Lovers Rock” and “Stupid Actress.” Jordana, pretty much her whole “Summer’s Over” album. A couple of songs from Wallows, like “Remember When” and “Calling After Me.” Also, a song called “Tek It” from Cafune.
