Jonathan Lazo Announces Candidacy for Democratic District Leader

Jonathan Lazo has announced his candidacy for Male Democratic District Leader in Assembly District 23, Part B. “I believe our community deserves more than constant fighting and empty politics. It deserves leadership that actually shows up, listens, and helps,” he said.

Lazo, 19, is a lifelong Rockaway resident, a proud Catholic and the son of Carlos, who owns the Last Stop Gourmet Shop on Beach 116th.  “Growing up in a small business family taught me that service is not a slogan — it’s something you live every day. You show up, you help people, and you do the right thing even when no one is watching.”

Although young, Lazo already brings experience in public service. “I did not get involved in public service to chase titles for the sake of having a title or to argue on social media. I got involved because I saw people being left behind. I started volunteering at 15 years old, later becoming Outreach Coordinator for the QueensLink project, fighting for better transit and opportunity for our neighborhoods. Since 2022, I have worked each summer on the staff of Stacey Pheffer Amato, helping residents navigate real problems — housing issues, quality-of-life concerns, and the everyday frustrations that too often fall through the cracks.

I am honored to have the endorsement of Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, whose leadership and commitment to our community has made a real difference for families across the district.”

“I have watched Jonathan grow into a dedicated public servant, and I could not be prouder to endorse him,” Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said. “Since the age of 16, Jonathan has worked closely with me helping residents navigate real challenges, and I saw firsthand his commitment to making sure people were heard and helped. He brings compassion, energy, and a deep sense of responsibility to everything he does. Jonathan truly cares about this community, and I know he will serve as a District Leader who shows up and puts people first.”

On his decision to run for the volunteer position, Lazo said, “I am running because this role should be about people, not party. While I am a Democrat, I believe a District Leader should serve everyone — Democrats, Republicans, independents, and anyone who needs help. If you live here, you matter. If you have a problem, you should have someone who will pick up the phone, walk with you through it, and fight for you.

“I want to be an active District Leader — visible in the community, accessible to residents, and willing to roll up my sleeves to get things done. I want people to know that no matter who you are, where you live, or how you vote, you can bring your concerns to me and be heard.”

If elected, Lazo would serve alongside Jeanette Garramone, the Female Democratic District Leader in Assembly District 23, Part B.  Garramone said, “Jonathan Lazo is the kind of community advocate our neighborhoods deserve. He is a dedicated public servant who has shown his commitment to the community and the constituents within 23AD. His work with QueensLink shows his devotion to expanding opportunity, improving transit equity. I’m proud to support Jonathan as District Leader and my co-leader, because he leads with integrity, compassion, and a deep understanding of the challenges our communities face. Together, we can build a stronger, more united district with grassroots civic engagement.”

Over the next few weeks, you may see Lazo around District 23, with a petition to sign for him to get on the ballot. “If you see me, I hope you’ll stop, say hello, and sign,” he said. “If you believe our politics can be better —more human, more honest, and more focused on real change — I ask for your support.”
