St. Camillus / St. Virgilius MVPs of the Week
The St. Camillus/ St. Virgilius basketball program is underway with about 150 local kids from 4th grade to 8th grade, playing in the Girls and Boys leagues. Here are some standout players this week.
Girls League
Esther Obianefo
Esther dominated all over the court this week. She is always a force to be reckoned with under the boards, as she was once again this week. But this week she also showed off her scoring ability as well. She was unstoppable on the offensive end. She was rebounding and getting points on her putbacks, as she always does, but she was also knocking it down from beyond the arc. Esther poured in an incredible 23 points and led her team to a solid victory.
Junior Boys League
Brendan Graves

This was Brendan’s second MVP award of the year, and well-deserved since he is one of the top players in the league. He is a fierce defender and rebounder, and he has all the offensive skills the great players have. He has slick moves that take him to the basket, and he can also hit from mid-range and behind the 3-point line. As usual, this week he scored from everywhere. He ended up with 22 points which was more than enough to secure the win for his team.
Senior Boys
League
Johnny Evangelista

Johnny is one smooth operator. He can score from anywhere, but his forte is his incredibly accurate shooting from beyond the 3-point line. It seems like he just doesn’t miss. He certainly doesn’t miss in clutch time. His team went into this playoff game as heavy underdogs with only one win the entire season, but thanks to Johnny’s league leading 27 points (11 in the key fourth quarter) his team was able to pull off the upset and move on to the semi-finals.
Senior Boys
League
Petey Hayden

Petey is the kind of player every coach wants on his team. He can do it all and he makes it look easy. He plays intense defense, he pulls down rebounds, and he is a prolific scorer. Petey can score from everywhere. He has strong moves to the basket that are unstoppable; he can pull up and hit jumpers from mid-range; and he’s got a sweet shot from beyond the arc. Petey poured in 24 points and led his team to a comfortable win and secured his team a place in the semi-finals.
