Spring Planting at Arverne Preserve

 Spring Planting at Arverne Preserve

On a chilly dreary Sunday morning, April 26, 30 volunteers showed up to plant trees and shrubs at the new East Arverne Nature Preserve (Beach 44th-57th Streets in Rockaway). On hand were staff members of NYC Dept. of Parks, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, and the American Littoral Society. Also present was NYC Council Community Liaison Pesach Osina to lend a helping hand.

The group planted beach plum, shadbush, pitch pine, blueberry, black cherry, and even some native prickly pear cactus. This project is funded by the American Littoral Society in memory of Cindy Goulder, a native plant landscaper who dedicated her life to beautifying NYC parks.

The next planting will take place on Sunday, May 31 at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Jamaica Bay Guardian Don Riepe: don@littoralsociety.org. Happy Spring!
