A Mardi Gras End to Summer

We may have reached Labor Day weekend already, but there’s plenty of ways to end summer with a bang.

Labor Day might be the official end to summer in Rockaway, but remember, lifeguards are on duty through Sunday, September 8, and most concessions remain open through September.

Labor Day means Mardi Gras for Broad Channel, Breezy Point and Roxbury. Breezy Point and Roxbury are private communities, so make sure you have an invite from friends or family to head there for the weekend to experience their hilariously entertaining parades. On Saturday, August 31, Breezy Point kicks off the fun with the 66th Annual Breezy Point Mardi Gras Parade at noon, starting on Oceanside Avenue at Queens Walk, and ending at the Breezy ballfield. Then at 2 p.m., the kids in Roxbury can participate in the Roxbury Children’s Mardi Gras Parade. Roxbury’s big parade will take place on Sunday, September 1 at 2 p.m., as the Roxbury Gladiolas continue their 100th birthday! The parade works its way from the boulevard to the bay and ends at the Roxbury softball fields.

All are welcome to join in Broad Channel’s Labor Day weekend activities, hosted by the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department. Broad Channel kicks it off with Dancin’ in the Streets at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 30. Head to the BCVFD at 15 Noel Road for the dance party. Beer and food will be available for purchase. On Saturday, August 31 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., head to the BCAC Field (125 Cross Bay Blvd.) for a family fun day with games and competitions. The Broad Channel Labor Day Parade is Monday, September 2. Sign up at 11 a.m. at the corner of 10th Road. The parade will start at 1 p.m. and head down Cross Bay Boulevard, ending at the BCAC Field, where everyone can continue celebrating.
