Catch A Wave & Take 5

By Troop 04434
Whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on, aren’t you sick of seeing garbage EVERY TIME you go to the beach? Fortunately, Girl Scout Troop 04434 has been working on a goal called Take 5. Take 5 is when you take five pieces of trash that is not yours and throw it out. It is important to do it because if you do, you are making the world cleaner.
Did you know that a lot of the plastic we use winds up in the ocean? The plastic items that people use can get blown around and wind up in drains, rivers, and the ocean. It pollutes drinking water, releases harmful chemicals and endangers animals! For example, a plastic bag in the ocean might look like a jellyfish to eat. Birds and sea life can get trapped or hurt because of plastic. If you don’t do Take 5, it can hurt the environment, and make the world gross. Our goal is to have no garbage on the beach. Leaving your trash is the opposite of making the world a better place. If we want our beaches and oceans to thrive, we need to do our part. You can participate by picking up five pieces of trash (that’s not yours) off the beach each time you go. If a lot of people do Take 5, fewer animals and fewer people will get hurt, and the environment will look much better. So help us fight pollution by doing Take 5!
We interviewed Carolin Wood. She is a lifetime Girl Scout. She works for the NYC Parks Department as a gardener for our local parks and beaches. She said it is really hard to pick up all the trash. Carolin wants to give people a clean beach. “The beach is cleaned every day and even with that, the beach is still filled with garbage”, Wood said. She also said, “I wish people would help more.” She did Take 5 without even knowing it, that’s how easy it is!
SO LETS GO OUT THERE AND TAKE 5!
