Collateral Damage in Broad Channel

 Collateral Damage in Broad Channel

The 17-week shutdown of the A train in Rockaway has created some collateral damage besides inconveniencing those who take public transportation. It’s also caused many parking spots to be eliminated in Broad Channel.

Broad Channel residents were caught off guard on Tuesday, January 14, when the MTA put up new signs at E 7th Road for the Q109 bus, a shuttle bus that will travel from Beach 67th Street in Rockaway, making stops at Beach 90th, Broad Channel and ending at Howard Beach-JFK, while the shutdown goes into mid-May. With the sudden creation of new bus stops came the elimination of about 11 parking spots in front of people’s homes on Cross Bay Blvd.

Several Broad Channel residents contacted Councilwoman Joann Ariola about the change, as the expectation was for the shuttle to stop at the current bus stop at Noel Road. However, she was told that the MTA couldn’t utilize that stop as it’s already used by the Q52/Q53/QM15/QM16 and QM17 buses, so it couldn’t accommodate the shuttle that will be making stops every few minutes. “This is temporary and will be removed once the outage is over,” Councilwoman Ariola said.

And as we go to press, on Wednesday afternoon, Ariola provided residents some good news. She reached out to the 100th Precinct and made an arrangement for residents to park along the center median, while the temporary bus stop is in place for the shutdown.
