Dune Squad Expands Efforts and Seeks New Members

By Juvie Anne Alfeche, RISE Public Programs Coordinator

RISE’s Dune Squad is continuing work on “Greater Rockaway” Coastal Resilience Plan. This year marks the third year of the plan’s implementation, with work resuming on Beach 69th Street. Last year, the restoration team completed the pilot area, which stretched along Beach Front Road from Beach 60th Street through Beach 67th Street.

The Dune Squad is responsible for a variety of tasks, including planting native shrubs and grasses, removing invasive plants, and facilitating community plantings on select weekends. They also monitor the health of native plantings and collaborate with volunteers to carry out restoration efforts.

RISE is looking to add more members to the team. Ideal candidates should have a connection to the Rockaway peninsula, an interest in native plants, and be comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.

The role offers fifteen to twenty hours per week, at $22 per hour, from March 16 to November 14, 2025, and it provides hands-on experience in environmental restoration and community engagement. RISE is pleased to offer folks an opportunity to gain valuable skills while making a meaningful impact in the Rockaways.
