East Arverne Preserve Beautification Project
A group of about 100 volunteers from the WeLoveU foundation joined the American Littoral Society last Sunday at the East Arverne Nature Preserve and planted over 150 trees, shrubs, and wildflowers in memory of the late landscaper Cindy Goulder. “This group was the best I’ve ever worked with,” Don Riepe, the project organizer, said. On hand to help out were rangers from NYC Parks as well as Ed Power, an expert gardener from Breezy Point.

Plantings included Red Cedar, Beach Plum, New England Aster, Red Chokecherry, and Butterflyweed. All plants are native to the coast and will enhance wildlife habitat, as well as beautify the site. This was the second year of planting conducted by the Littoral Society at this site and they hope to do a final planting next spring.
