Hello darkness, my old friend. Daylight Saving is this Saturday night (really Sunday) at 2 a.m. On the bright side (pun intended), we gain an hour of sleep this weekend. Here’s a friendly reminder: don’t forget to put your clocks back!

The water may be too chilly for us these days, but certainly not for the whales. Earlier this week social media was flooded with great photos and videos of the giant marine mammals putting on a show for anyone lucky enough to be walking on the beach.

Break a leg! The Rockaway Theatre Company has just announced its season line-up for 2025. Hitting the stage will be three blockbuster musicals, one Pulitzer Prize winner and one world premiere! Welcome “Spamalot!” “The Value,” “Sweet Charity,” “August Osage County” and “Hair.” Performance details, dates and season subscription information will be available shortly on the RTC website.

Veteran’s Day is coming up on Monday, November 11. If you have a local veteran you would like to recognize for sacrificing so much and serving our beloved country, send us their photo by noon on Tuesday, November 5, to mail@rockawaytimes.com. We will do our best to get it in the paper next week for Veteran’s Day.

Councilwoman Joann Ariola is again having a Thanksgiving Feast food giveaway. If you or a family you know is in need this Thanksgiving, her office is giving away precooked meals for four people, which will be picked up Wednesday, November 27. You must register in advance by calling 718-738-108. Supply is limited, so call soon.

Our friends at the NYC Ferry have announced that effective next Monday, November 4, NYC Ferry’s Winter schedule will begin. Some departure times on the Rockaway line will change, so please review the schedule to plan your trip after November 4 accordingly. Before it gets too dark and cold, this is a great time to take photos around Rockaway, so you’ll be ready for the 2025 Rockaway Times Photo Contest. The contest will open in a few months, but we also always accept photos for our Local Color page(s) (when we have room). So, get out there and get snappin’.

There will be no trash, curbside compost or recycling collection on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5. Residents who normally receive pickup on Tuesday should place their material at the curb Tuesday evening for collection starting Wednesday, November 6.

The next meeting of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association will be on Thursday, November 7 at 7 p.m., at the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th St.) in the upstairs meeting room. The meeting will include representatives from the 100th precinct and our elected officials.
