This weekend, our Managing Editor, Katie McFadden, gets married. We at The Rockaway Times wish her and her new husband, Paul, a great day and nothing but the best in the future.

And just remember, although “summer” is over, the uptown summer parking rules remain in effect until September 30.

Another sign summer is ending… The New York Dippers Club will be back at it starting Sunday, October 1. They will continue their daily dipping at Beach 67th Street Monday to Friday at 8 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. All are welcome to join!

Local swimming phenom, Tess Howley, was recently named to the USA swimming national team for the 2023-2024 season. She earned her spot on the elite squad based on her performance swimming for Long Island Aquatic Club (LICA) at LC Junior Nationals in Irvine this summer. Congrats Tess on this well-deserved honor!

That was quick. The ribbon cutting at the new building for PS47 in Broad Channel took place this past week. The building was built and completed in 18 months. It is going to be great for the community to have the new school building.

On Friday, September 29, The Rockaway Hotel + Spa is hosting a fundraiser to help raise awareness and funds for the non-profit organization committed to promoting water safety in underserved communities, Rising Tide Effect. The poolside fundraiser, beginning at 7 p.m., will feature live music, food and drinks as well as a silent auction and raffle which includes a week-long stay in a luxury bungalow at The Rockaway Hotel + Spa, a signed Ryan Murphy poster, and two round trip tickets to anywhere from JetBlue. Tickets can be purchased on The Rockaway Hotel’s website.

James Franco is for sale! Wait, what? A houseboat, named Da James Franco, docked at the 59th Street Marina, is currently for sale with an asking price of $250,000. This unique houseboat, which was reportedly previously owned by James Franco himself before the current owner, seems to have it all with a bathroom, kitchen, living room, sitting room and office. Da James Franco is still up on Airbnb for $149 a night.

St. Francis de Sales Parish is having their Oktoberfest Raffle, which is a 50/50 raffle. The winner will be drawn on Sunday, October 29. Tickets are $100. Tickets are sold after Masses, or you can purchase tickets from any Parish council, or finance committee member, or Susanne Blum at 347-282-0018. All proceeds will support the Parish. The Oktoberfest event will be back next year.

On Sunday, October 1, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., head over to the Knights of Columbus for Literary Day: Rockaway Associated Authors as local authors gather to sell and sign their work. Some of the local wordsmiths that are scheduled to be in attendance include Richie Pontieri, Owen Loof, Steve Bialek, Dan Brown, The Rockaway Times’ own Dan Guarino and Shane Kulman, and more! The list of authors who will be attending will continue to grow right up until the day of the event. Admission is free and there will be a cash bar.
