The Richmond County Supreme Court has set a court date for Tuesday, October 3, in response to the bi-partisan injunction seeking to halt the placement of a migrant base camp at Floyd Bennett Field. Judge Lizette Colon will be presiding over the hearing. The bi-partisan coalition is also planning to file an injunction at the federal level as well.

Yesterday, September 27, Councilwoman Joann Ariola testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources in Washington, D.C. to discuss the housing of migrants in Floyd Bennett Field. While comments from the committee members quickly turned to bickering about partisan politics, Councilwoman Ariola presented her case well when allowed the opportunity to speak and, unlike her federal counterparts, managed to stick to the hearing’s topic.

Last weekend was what you call a “washout.” What a dreary weekend – ALL weekend long. And a long holiday weekend that was packed with happenings, no less. Most local events and sports were canceled and rescheduled for upcoming weeks.

Dogtoberfest, sponsored by Pawlacio Pets, has a new date scheduled for Sunday, October 8, at 11:00 a.m. The parade will take place on the boardwalk at Beach 108th Street and end at Beach 95th Street.

Another postponed event was the Ryan Rudden Hockey Tournament. The new date for the tournament is this Saturday, September 30. The puck will drop at 9:00 a.m. at the Beach 108th hockey rink. For more information, you can check their Instagram page at ruddenhockeytournament

Merchants on Beach 116th and Beach 129th, Rockaway’s two main thoroughfares, are both hosting annual Fall Festivals. Beach 116th’s first annual festival will take place on Sunday, October 15, and Beach 129th’s second annual will take place on Saturday, October 21. Please support the local establishments that help to make this community the amazing place it is!

Since 2017, Catch a Cure has been raising needed funds for individuals and families on the peninsula who are dealing with cancer. This year, they are recognizing many wonderful people.  From Rockaway: In Memory of Andrew Israel, and in Honor of Heather Leonard. From Breezy/Roxbury:  In Memory of Jeanette Healey, and in Honor of Denise Rodman. And from Broad Channel: In Memory of Chris Keegan Sr., and in Honor of Rocco Pisani. This Sunday, October 1, at 9:00 a.m., the “Catch a Cure” 5k family walk/run will be on the boardwalk at Beach 116th Street. Get out there, and run or walk, in support of a great cause! You can register online at Rockawaytc.org by 6 p.m. on September 30 or in person at Rogers on Beach 116th before the race on October 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

Next week, on Wednesday, October 4 at 3 p.m., celebrating the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, head to the St. Francis de Sales Prayer Garden on Beach 129th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard to have your pet blessed at the annual Blessing of the Animals.

This Sunday is October 1 (October already!), so here’s a reminder that now is a good time to check emergency supplies (flashlights, batteries, to-go kits). The Sandy anniversary is in just a few weeks.
