High Tide

*****

Happy Veteran’s Day, which is celebrated tomorrow, Friday, November 11.  For those who’ve served, thank you for your service and sacrifices. (It cannot be overstated how important veterans are to this country and our way of life).

Saturday, November 12 is the 21st anniversary of the crash of Flight 587 in Belle Harbor. It was a terrible and terrifying event that occurred as the community was dealing with the aftermath of 9/11. Two hundred and sixty people aboard the flight were killed and five Rockaway residents were killed in their homes. We hope the best for families and friends who still mourn those who died that day.

Whoa. Things are still a little fuzzy because, you know, conceding elections is such a 1990’s thing. As we go to press, some races remain contested and the final number of seats in the House and Senate is still unknown. What is known is that in New York, things look like they did on Monday, with one huge exception. Kathy Hochul keeps the Governor seat; and Gregory Meeks stays as Congressman. But holy smokes, it looks like Tom Sullivan will edge incumbent Stacey Pheffer Amato for the NY State Assembly. It would appear local Lee Zeldin voters, especially in Far Rockaway, stayed on the R side of the ballot and swung the race for Sullivan. If things hold, we offer congratulations to the veteran from Breezy Point.

The district didn’t give Paul King much of a chance to unseat Greg Meeks. The Democrats outnumber Republicans by such a large margin that competitive races are more likely in the primaries than the general election. Despite the long, long odds, King gave it a go and worked tirelessly on the campaign trail. We saw up close his effort and we have to tip our hat to him and his team. We’re glad he’ll still be a member of the Community Board.

Eric Ulrich, the former city councilman, resigned as Commissioner of the Department of Buildings as a result of an ongoing gambling investigation. Legal issues aside, it’s unfortunate that a person so familiar with Rockaway is no longer in such an important position in a City agency that has long been a challenge for locals.
