High Tide
Happy Veterans Day! This Saturday, November 11 is Veterans Day. For those who have served, thank you for your service and sacrifices. It can never be overstated how important veterans are to this great country and our way of life.

Sunday, November 12 is also the 22nd anniversary of the crash of Flight 587 in Belle Harbor. It was a terrible and terrifying day that occurred here in our community as we were also dealing with the aftermath of 9/11. Two hundred and sixty people aboard the flight were killed and five local Rockaway residents were killed in their homes. We sincerely hope the best for the families and friends who still mourn those loved ones who died that day.

Speaking of new, the new stores just keep popping up on 129th. The Sneaker Gallery has taken over the storefront located between Pico and Jameson’s and looks to be opening soon. We wish them luck!

It’s that time of year! Many of our advertisers are offering holiday specials for the upcoming holiday season. Whether it be sales or parties, please look right here in The Rockaway Times for some pretty great deals. The peninsula has so much to offer! When you take advantage of the deals our great advertisers have, be sure to tell them you saw their ad in the Rockaway Times. We would greatly appreciate that!

On that note, another reminder about the upcoming holidays! To our awesome advertisers, we will be publishing early Thanksgiving week. The email and paper delivery will be on Wednesday, November 22. Advertisers, please have your ads to us by Tuesday morning — especially if you want to reach Black Friday shoppers!

We still have not seen migrants in the newly constructed tents in Floyd Bennett Field. The hearing in the court case regarding the housing of migrants in the National Park was postponed yet again from November 3 to today, November 9. As soon as we hear anything, we will put it up on our social media pages.

Many of us here at The Rockaway Times have a soft spot for animals. Next Saturday, November 18, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., stop by the Office of Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (95-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard) (in partnership with Catfixerny Rescue and Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue) to adopt a new pet, or just meet some adorable kittens and cats, and if adopting is not in your future, you can simply donate or volunteer with some great rescue organizations. For more information or any questions, please contact noahsarkny@gmail.com.

You know what’s confusing? Daylight Saving Time. You might have noticed in last week’s High Tides we mentioned that we would be losing an hour last weekend. Well, wasn’t it a wonderful surprise when we gained an hour instead? Just another reason to scrap the whole thing … it’ll be less confusing!
