The peninsula is very busy this time of year. There are a lot of things going on from holiday lights to boutiques and holiday markets, not to mention all the festive events at local establishments. Congratulations to the Sneaker Gallery on Beach 129th Street on their grand opening on Tuesday, December 12! We hope everyone puts their best foot forward and comes out to support them.

Belle Harbor’s Paul King has announced that he will once again be running for U.S. Congress against incumbent Gregory Meeks in the November 2024 election. Paul last ran for the same seat in 2022.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed the bill to stop the housing of migrants in federal parks, which would mean that migrants would not be housed at Floyd Bennett Field. It’s now up to the Senate to do the same thing. Locally, the court appearance that took place this past Monday was to solidify that the case will be moved to the Kings County Supreme Court. The new hearing date in Kings County Court has yet to be released. There are roughly 600 people, all families, residing at FBF.

The 100th Precinct, along with many precincts around the city, has recently launched an e-commerce exchange zone. This area, located at the precinct on Beach 94th is designed to be a safe, well-lit and well-monitored area where people can meet and exchange items purchased online.

Congratulations to two standout varsity softball players from Scholars’ Academy who recently signed national letters of intent to continue their sports careers on the college level. Lauren Dorazio will be attending Pace University and Alexa Nolan will be playing at Adelphi. And they still have one more season in high school this spring, when they hope to avenge their loss to Tottenville High School in the city championships last season! We will be watching ladies!

Last weekend, another local high school student, Sean Green, who swims for the Long Island Aquatic Club and has committed to the University of Georgia, won the 400 IM at the U.S. Open 18 and Under National Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina with a time of 4:25.36. Way to go Sean!

The Rockaway Beach Autism Families is having its 5th Annual Holiday party and is hoping you can help. The Rockaway Times, Robin Shapiro, Smoke & Barrel and the Knights of Columbus are accepting unwrapped gifts through tomorrow, Friday, December 8. You can drop off any gifts at the Rockaway Times’ office at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive. RBAF has a wish list at https://bit.ly/47H4Gkz  . Some items on the wish list include various toys, games, books, noise-canceling headphones, train sets, coloring books, and sketch pads. Our very own Kami-Leigh Agard does a wonderful job running RBAF.

If you are interested in starting a home-based childcare business; a licensed family or group daycare provider; an informal provider; an illegal exempt childcare provider, the Business Outreach Center (BOC) is offering a free child-care training course with funding that was provided by Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers. Child Care Means Business (CCMB) is an intense training that teaches business management, nutrition, and early childhood development.
