Honoring Our Veterans
Veterans Day, a federal holiday honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces, is Monday, November 11. There are some local ways to honor our veterans.
On Friday, November 8, Rockaway Park High School is hosting a Salute to Veterans Appreciation Luncheon for our veterans. All veterans are welcome to the luncheon at the Beach Channel Educational Campus (100-00 Beach Channel Drive), where there will be performances by the school band and dance team. To RSVP, call 347-510-4155.
On Veterans Day, November 11 at 11 a.m., the O’Connell Post of the American Legion is hosting their annual Veterans Day ceremony in front of the Doughboy Monument on Beach 94th Street and Rockaway Beach Blvd. There will be a remembrance and prayer service ending with Taps. All are welcome.
On Sunday afternoon, November 17, the local O’Connell Post of the American Legion will also host a party at the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) for 30 to 40 residents of the federal and state residences at the St. Albans Veterans community living centers. These residents will be treated to a delicious meal, music and entertainment. If anyone wishes to donate presents (ie., new and packaged clothing items of all sizes or other items) to distribute at this event, you can bring them to the Knights any day after 3 p.m. There is always a need for socks, t-shirts and personal care items.
