On Monday, May 19, District 27 hosted its first-ever Civics End-of-Year Showcase, bringing together students from across the district to celebrate youth voice, civic action, and community leadership. While the event was held at P.S. 63 in Ozone Park, it was truly a districtwide celebration—with more than a dozen Rockaway schools proudly represented.
Students presented Soapbox speeches, participated in mock elections, showcased participatory budgeting projects, and highlighted the civic learning they engaged in throughout the year. The energy was incredible, students took the mic, shared their ideas, and demonstrated just how much young people care about the future of their communities.
Under the leadership of Acting Superintendent Melissa Compson, District 27 continues to prioritize civic learning as a pathway to student empowerment and community engagement.
