Story and Photos

Whether you are taking a leisurely stroll through the trails of Arverne by the bay, which can be accessed on Beach 54th Street, taking an early morning walk in the Arverne Nature Preserve by the beach, or gazing at our beautiful ocean, you will observe that the Arverne area is teeming with natural beauty. With the tranquility of Arverne, you don’t have to go far to escape the noise of the city and indulge in nature.
Have you ever paused and considered the diverse wildlife thriving above your head? Our region has an abundance of trees that provide a habitat for numerous crown herons. Following a series of noises, I recently discover that quaker parrots, also known as monk parakeets, have taken residence in our neighborhood, constructing their nest in preparation for the approaching winter. During your stroll through the Arverne Nature Preserve, you may be treated to melodies of songbirds, mocked by a mockingbird or unexpectedly see a vibrant cardinal perched atop of a telephone pole, engaging you in a very lively conversation. Additionally, you may notice a multitude of dragonflies, harmlessly by, feeding on biting flies.
The area is dotted with wild blackberries and raspberries and vibrant wildflowers with butterflies all around. The crowning glory of this all is the symphony of the healing sounds, featuring the harmonies of the birds, the ocean’s rhythmic motion, and the exuberant vocalization of parrots, effectively recreating the enchanting atmosphere of the Brazilian rainforest. This should serve as a compelling incentive to experience the wonders that nature has to offer. Get outside!
