On and Off the Fields

 On and Off the Fields

By Sarah McVeigh

During football season, there is nothing I love more than watching College GameDay every Saturday morning. There’s just something about a cup of coffee, a fall breeze through the open windows, and sitting with my perfect little puppy watching this TV masterpiece.

Every week, the GameDay crew invites a celebrity guest to make picks for the week. This year, in November, one of those guests really caught my eye: a gorgeous man by the name of Justin Fields. Not only was he beautiful, but he also said those magic words, picking Arizona State University (my alma mater) to win that week.

Obviously, I was hooked. So I did what most girls do … I followed him on Instagram. I learned that Justin Fields began his college playing days with the Georgia Bulldogs but transferred to THE Ohio State Buckeyes, where he shined as their starting quarterback. He ended up winning the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year twice and, in 2021, a National Championship. After college, Fields was drafted by the Chicago Bears, where the team struggled, and after a few years, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. After starting only six games there, the Steelers signed Russell Wilson (Ciara’s husband), and Fields lost his starting job for the year.

So, after my Instagram creepin’, I became obsessed with this random football player. Time passed, and it turned out that Justin Fields’ time on the Steelers looked like it might be coming to an end, and the New York Jets just so happened to be in need of a quarterback. Trying to sound like I was cool, I went to my wonderful male in-laws and told them that Fields should be the Jets’ next QB … everyone ignored me. Then I pitched the idea to my husband’s best guy friends (you know who you are) … they all laughed at me. Now, it is March 2025, and where has Justin Fields ended up? The New York Jets!

So, because of this one random coincidence, I feel that I am qualified to write a sports column. I will try not to discuss the physical appearance of every man that comes up, but I make no promises. Please, do not come here for sports news. I will try to be topical, pop culture-based, and (hopefully) entertaining. Next week, I’ll share some thoughts on New York’s team: The St. John’s Red Storm.

Welcome to SARAH on the SIDELINES.
