Overweight Truck Cameras Pop Up on Bridges

Questions have been popping up about cameras that were recently installed at the ends of the Cross Bay Bridge and Marine Parkway Bridge in recent weeks. After speculation about them being seatbelt or cell phone cameras or even congestion pricing cameras, we reached out to Councilwoman Joann Ariola’s office for information to clear up the rumors.

The councilwoman’s office reached out to the NYC Department of Transportation, which said the cameras weren’t theirs, but after further digging, MTA Bridges and Tunnels said the cameras are for overweight trucks. Weight sensors are also being installed on the bridges. When a truck passes these sensors and is found to be overweight, the camera will take a photo of the vehicle’s license plate and a fine will be issued. They are not yet active. A similar system has been in use on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway since late 2023.
