PENINSULA PAGES

 PENINSULA PAGES

By Patrice Riordan McCannby McCann

It’s hard to believe Labor Day is fast approaching. I am furiously reading as much as I can these days before September’s reality of work and school.

Here are a few mysteries for your reading pleasure!

“Exiles” by Jane Harper

This is the third book by this author that I’ve read. Set in Australia, these books feature Aaron Falk, who is a federal investigator who hasn’t had the easiest of lives. You don’t have to read the previous two to enjoy this one. Kim is a mother to two girls – one is 16 and one is an infant. Her infant is found alone at a fair, tucked snugly in her stroller. Kim has disappeared. One year later, Aaron comes to this small town and gets wrapped up in the investigation. Well-written characters and a terrific mystery that I totally didn’t figure out! This one is a great beach read!

“I Will Find You” by Harlan Coben

I always make it a point to read Harlan Coben’s novels when they come out. They are dependable mysteries that are often set in the NY/NJ area. David is in prison for the murder of his toddler son, Matthew. David professes his innocence, but he is tortured by the fact that he didn’t protect his child. Five years into the sentence, his former sister-in-law, Rachel, comes to visit and shows him a photo of an 8 year old boy at an amusement park. They both feel that it’s a photo of Matthew. Things very quickly change. David plans a prison escape and he’s determined to find Matthew. I zipped through this fast-paced mystery. Thumbs up!

“The Broken Girls” by Simone St. James

This was so good! The setting is a school for wayward girls. In 2014, it is abandoned, but in 1950, it was home to many girls. These young ladies have caused trouble for their families and are shipped off to Idlewild Hall in Vermont. Four of them forge a strong friendship and then one of them goes missing. This is a twisty turning mystery that even has some ghost story elements. I seriously could not put this one down. Highly recommend it!

Happy reading and don’t forget the sunscreen! Oh, and watch out for sharks.
