 Plumbing Hints

By Robin Shapiro

People who take winter vacations should be aware of the possibility of burst pipes. Here are some preventative strategies:

  1. Shut off valves at sinks, toilets, tubs, and showers. Cut off main water supply valve.
  2. Turn off the power to your water heater in order to prevent fires which could occur once the water supply has been shut off. Check for puddles, rust and unusual noise. If you notice any of these signs then call your plumber.
  3. Appliances:  Inspect the refrigerator and washing machine lines for leaks, rust or damage. Shut off the water supply to appliances.  DON’T shut off the power to your refrigerator or your food will spoil.
  4. Check your boiler. Most boilers have an expected life of 20-30 years. This doesn’t mean that the boiler is immune to wear and tear damage. A damaged boiler can create a flood.
  5. Have a friend check your house while you are away.

You can have a plumber check your home before you leave. It’s a good idea to have a plumber periodically check your house anyway. My go-to plumber is Adam Magnicarri of Solo Plumbing:  917-589-3363. Martin Luther King Day is Monday, January 20. Closings: Banks, NYC public schools, U.S. Post Office, no Sanitation pickup. Call me. Love, Robin.
